Kahala is perhaps the most desired neighborhood on Oahu. This is where you will find exclusive beachfront estates hidden behind large gates at the end of winding driveways. The lots are typically large, more than 10,000 square feet. Some of the more prestigious homes sit on parcels of more than 40,000 square feet. This may help explain why realtors will tell you that any Kahala single family home selling for less than $2 million is probably a tear down. That may be a bit overstated, but Kahala homes in that price range will likely need some work before you will want to move in.
From the beach at Waikiki, Kahala is to the east just on the other side of Diamond Head. Its close proximity to all that Honolulu has to offer enhances the Kahala lifestyle. Not that you would ever want to leave. The beach is a short walk from your home, and there are excellent shops and restaurants at the upscale Kahala Mall just a few blocks away. The theater at the mall features mainstream blockbusters, but it is also one of the few places on Oahu where you can regularly enjoy smaller budget independent and art films.
If you don't mind a 5 minute drive, you can experience the vibrant restaurants in Kaimuki along Waialae Avenue. This is where award-winning chefs like Ed Kinney and Lee Anne Wong share their talents. No matter what you are craving, you will find it on Waialae Avenue. Fresh and delicious sushi? I would recommend Maguro-ya. A tasty pork chop? Head to 12th Avenue Grill.
Most of the homes for sale in Kahala are single family. There are a few condos and townhouses, but not many. I just checked the active Kahala listings and they range in price from $1.1 million to $16.9 million.
